Hold Your Mala - Drape the mala over your right hand, letting it rest between your middle and ring fingers. Start at the Guru Bead - Begin at the large bead (called the guru bead) or tassel. Do not count the guru bead. Recite Your Mantra - Use your thumb to move one bead at a time, reciting your mantra, prayer, or intention on each bead. Work Your Way Around - Continue bead by bead until you reach the guru bead again. For a longer session, you may reverse direction and repeat the process.
