There is a lovely story behind these ukuleles. In 2024, David and Bondhan travelled to Central Java, near the city of Solo, looking for musical instruments. Bondhan is Ancient Wisdom's Indonesian designer – but importantly for this story, he's also a musician and sometime heavy-rock guitarist.

They ended up walking through what is locally known as Guitar Village, where making guitars and ukuleles is a community business. One workshop makes the bodies, another the necks, another works on the fretboards. Eventually all those parts find their way to the families who assemble, finish and string the instruments.

It's rather like a band – everybody plays their own part.

AW had actually been looking for ukuleles for some time, but the quality and price of the ones found in Bali never quite added up. Then came a nice coincidence.

Bondhan had already researched one of the best-selling and best-reviewed Indonesian ukulele makers online. Wandering through the village, David and Bondhan happened upon a family making ukuleles... and discovered it was the very same family.

Bondhan duly road-tested one with a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. Apparently it passed.

From there, the AW version developed. Bondhan specified better strings and an improved tuning mechanism, as well as working on some of the finishing details. That's also why you'll find the little bD mark on the instrument.

Today AW imports what this artisan family can reasonably produce. It's not an unlimited factory-made line – it's a proper little collaboration that started by walking into a family workshop in Java.

A good story to tell the next time a customer picks one up and starts strumming.
