Felt is rather clever stuff

Unlike woven or knitted fabric, wool felt is made by working loose fibres with warm water, soap and plenty of rolling and rubbing. The fibres gradually lock together, forming a firm and durable material which can be cut, shaped and decorated.

For these pouches, the finished felt is carefully stitched, fitted with a zip and given a cotton lining. There is quite a lot of patient handwork behind such a small bag.

A long-standing connection with Nepal

Ancient Wisdom has worked with this supplier for many years. Production is focused on creating employment for women living in villages around the outer Kathmandu Valley.

Many had little opportunity to continue through higher education, but already possessed valuable sewing, felting and craft skills learned at home and within their communities. The workshop gives those skills a commercial purpose and provides much-needed paid employment.

Continued orders matter. They help keep work flowing to women who might otherwise have few local employment opportunities, while allowing practical artisan skills to remain useful in a changing economy.

Small pouch, plenty of uses

They are made with a 100% wool outer and cotton lining, giving them a substantial feel quite different from a mass-produced synthetic pouch. The assorted colours and cheerful designs also make a lovely display when several are placed together.

Your customers can use them for jewellery, make-up, cards, keys, pens and all those little things that normally disappear to the bottom of a handbag. They work well as an affordable gift, travel pouch or colourful add-on purchase.

For retailers, the combination of natural materials, practical use and a genuine maker story gives the range plenty to talk about both in-store and online.

What are the Natural Felt Zipper Pouches made from? +

The pouches are handmade using natural materials, with a 100% wool felt outer and 100% cotton lining. The felt gives them a substantial, tactile feel that helps distinguish them from mass-produced synthetic pouches.

What size are the pouches and what can customers use them for? +

There are a range of sizes, they all fit inside a handbag, backpack or suitcase. Customers can use them for jewellery, make-up, cards, keys, pens, travel essentials and other small everyday items.

How are the pouches supplied to retailers? +

Each design is supplied in a pack of three pouches in assorted colours. This gives retailers some colour variety without having to purchase large quantities of each individual variation.

Are these pouches handmade? +

Yes. The pouches are handmade in Nepal, where the wool fibres are worked into felt before the finished material is stitched, fitted with a zip and given a cotton lining. The products are also presented as artisan, ethically sourced and Fair Trade items.

Is there a good story behind the range that retailers can share with customers? +

Yes. AW has worked with the Nepalese supplier for many years, with production helping to provide paid employment for women living in villages around the outer Kathmandu Valley. This gives retailers a genuine artisan and maker story to use alongside the products in-store or online.

Where would these pouches work best in a shop? +

They are particularly suited to gift shops, fashion and accessory stores, craft and ethical shops, lifestyle stores and alternative retailers. Their small size and colourful designs also make them useful near the till or in a small-gifts section as an affordable add-on purchase. They can be cross-sold with jewellery, stationery, cosmetics, felt bags and other small gifts.

Why are they a useful range for retailers to stock? +

They combine several strong retail qualities in one small product: practical everyday use, natural materials, handmade production, and colourful designs. With three pieces per wholesale pack and multiple designs available, retailers can build an attractive display without committing to large quantities of any one style.

Will every pouch look exactly the same? +

As the pouches are handmade, slight variations in colour, stitching, shape and decorative details can occur from piece to piece. These small differences are part of their artisan character and can be presented to customers as a feature rather than a flaw, helping each pouch feel a little more individual.
