Flowers from the Kathmandu Valley

These felt flowers come from one of AW’s long-standing suppliers in Nepal, a business with a particularly worthwhile purpose. It creates regular employment for women from villages around the outer Kathmandu Valley, where opportunities for those without higher education can be limited.

The work does not require formal qualifications, but it certainly requires skill: steady hands, patience and a good eye for shape and colour. These are talents the women already had; the workshop gives those talents a practical value and provides much-needed income for their families and communities.

Felt making is wonderfully low-tech. Loose wool fibres are worked with warm water, soap and plenty of rubbing and rolling until they bind together into a strong, dense material. The felt is then cut, shaped and carefully assembled into petals, leaves and flower heads before being fixed onto the stems.

Because so much is done by hand, small differences in shape, size and colour are quite normal. They are not factory-perfect plastic flowers—and that is rather the point.

Behind one cheerful flower lies a whole chain of skilled work: preparing the felt, shaping the petals, building the flower, attaching the stem and checking the finished piece for export.

This is one of those products that becomes even nicer when your customers know who made it and why the work matters. A little piece of the Kathmandu Valley, ready to brighten a vase somewhere much further from home.

What are the Felt Flowers made from? +

The flowers are handmade from felt using natural wool fibres. The fibres are worked with warm water and soap to create the felt, which is then cut, shaped and assembled into petals, leaves and flower heads.

Where are the Felt Flowers made? +

The range is handmade in Nepal by one of AW’s long-standing felt suppliers. The supplier provides regular employment for women from villages around the Kathmandu Valley, giving retailers an interesting artisan story to share with their customers.

How large are the flowers? +

Sizes vary slightly according to the flower and because they are handmade. For example, the roses are approximately 31 cm long, while the lilies are around 25 cm long. The product descriptions indicate an approximate overall range of 25–35 cm per flower.

Will every flower look exactly the same? +

No—and that is part of their handmade character. Because the flowers are individually crafted, small variations in colour, shape and size are normal. Retailers can use this as part of the product story, helping distinguish the range from mass-produced artificial flowers.

When are Felt Flowers most likely to sell? +

They have strong year-round gifting potential and can also be promoted around occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays, weddings and housewarmings. Unlike fresh flowers, they do not wilt or require watering, so customers can keep them as a lasting decorative gift.

How can retailers merchandise the range? +

The flexible stems make the flowers easy to arrange in vases, bouquets, wreaths, gift baskets and window displays. A simple vase filled with several designs can create an eye-catching display near the till, while individual stems can work well as lower-priced add-on purchases.

Can the flowers be sold individually? +

Yes. One of the advantages of the range is that retailers can sell the flowers individually by the stem or combine several stems into bouquets. This gives you the flexibility to offer an affordable impulse gift as well as higher-value arrangements.
