Teak Root Bowls
  • Compelling natural homeware – These bowls combine practical use, gift appeal and strong display presence, giving retailers several genuine ways to sell the range.

  • The root creates the design – Unlike factory-cut wooden bowls, each piece is hand-carved around the natural grain, curves and hollows of teak root, so no two have exactly the same character.

  • A range customers can explore – Smooth, rugged, leaf-shaped, handled and sculptural forms create plenty of choice without losing the family’s recognisable natural look.

  • Useful in store and at home – Display whole fruit, wrapped treats, soaps, crystals, jewellery or small gifts while keeping the bowl itself available to buy.

  • Easy to cross-merchandise – Their warm wood tones sit naturally with crystals, candles, incense, artisan soaps, tableware and other Indonesian homeware.

These Teak Root Bowls come from a long-standing AW supplier in Situbondo, East Java — an area with a real tradition of working with teak root and natural wood forms.

Our supplier is a husband-and-wife team who regularly make the journey from East Java across to Bali, bringing their artisan wares direct to our AW warehouse. It is not exactly a quick pop round the corner either — there is a truck, a ferry, and a fair bit of Indonesian road involved. Proper commitment, basically.

Once the bowls arrive at our Bali warehouse, the AW team checks them carefully. We carry out quality control, clean and oil the bowls where needed, then add barcodes, hangtags and protective packaging ready for export.

This extra step is important. Teak root bowls are naturally rustic and individual, but they still need to be retail-ready. Our job is to keep the beautiful handmade character while making sure the products are practical for shops to receive, display and sell.

Teak root is wonderful because it does not behave like ordinary factory-cut wood. The artisan works with the natural grain, curves and shape of the root, so each bowl has its own look and personality. Some are smooth and elegant, others a little more wild and earthy. That is very much part of the appeal.

Can I sell these as food bowls? +

They are best positioned as fruit bowls, dry serving bowls and decorative display bowls. For retailers, I would avoid over-selling them for wet salads, hot food, sauces or long food storage. In the EU, anything marketed as intended for food contact needs to comply with food-contact material rules, so safer wording is: ideal for fruit, wrapped treats, bread, dry snacks and home display.

What should I say if customers expect the exact item shown in the photo? +

Use wording such as: “Each piece is individually shaped by nature, so size, grain, edge line and colour tone will vary.” This helps avoid disappointment, especially for online retailers. It is better to sell the variation as part of the product rather than let customers discover it after delivery.

Do they need extra work before going on display? +

Usually no, but retailers should still give natural wood products a quick check when unpacking. A wipe with a dry cloth and a little rearranging on the shelf can make a big difference. If a bowl looks a bit dry after travel, a small amount of suitable wood oil can revive the grain nicely.

What about timber legality and responsible sourcing questions? +

For Indonesian wooden products, retailers may occasionally be asked about legal timber sourcing. Indonesia operates the SVLK timber legality verification system, designed to trace and verify the legality of timber in trade.
